DKWIO Approach

DKWIO is able to introduce children to life experiences and opportunities they might otherwise have never known. Every child is precious and full of opportunity. Our purpose is to expose them to life changing information and education that will enable them to foster a healthy mind, body and spirit.

The program implementation follows a basic formula for each of the weekly, hour long sessions. The formula is broken down into these basic components:

Demonstration / Description of Session - 10 Minutes

  • This is an opportunity for the participants to clear their mind
  • It's a time for calm
  • We want all of the participants to focus and visualize on the session
  • Session leader will describe the activity and goals of the session
  • This will be a time to demonstrate any of the skills that may be applied to the activity
  • The session leader may use sports equipment, visual and audio aids to better understand the activity
  • Individuals may be selected to assist in the demonstrations
  • Guest speakers may be invited to help facilitate the session
  • Remember - Demonstrate just a few skills each session. You can make a series and learn a few skills each session. Allow the participants to learn and have fun!

Nutrition - 5 Minutes

  • Introduce nutritional information consistent with each weeks theme (ie balance, energy)
  • Offer tools and tips to support healthy living
  • Provide specific examples of healthy food choices
  • According to Pete Friessen, head trainer for the Carolina Hurricanes, nutrition is the most important aspect in both wellness and fitness

Activity - 30 Minutes

  • Now it's time to apply the skills learned
  • This is a time to get everyone involved
  • Physical activity is crucial to achieving our mission!
  • Tips
    • Take mini breaks
    • Hydrate (Drink H2O)
    • Competition of skills can be great way to include everyone!
    • If you are playing a sports game... it's not important to keep score, but it's more important to cheer everyone on
    • Make everyone feel important and reward participation

Recap & Resources - 5 Minutes

  • You have just completed the activity. Now it's time to bring it home!
  • Review what the skills or the information they have learned
  • Ask questions
  • Highlight the successes of the session
  • Have something they can take home (it can be as simple as handouts, pamphlets or any small incentives i.e. wristbands, H2O bottles, etc.
  • Tips - Have everyone sit in a big circle. This will get everyone to calm down and will create a circle of trust and sharing. Have everyone take a turn to describe what they learned and how they feel.

Relaxation - 10 Minutes

  • Now it's time to relax and bring the session to a close
  • Let everyone get comfortable and let the energy shift to calm
  • Breathing, stretching and closing of the eyes are all good techniques for relaxation
  • Stretching can be very effective especially if you have been involved in a sports activity
  • Tips - Remember it's extremely important to allow all the participants to have several minutes of relaxation. It's time for reflection and positive images. Everyone should leave feeling proud and sense of accomplishment.
